'Tis The Season (For Netflix Christmas Movies)

15 Nov 2020

The festive season is absolutely my favourite time of year. I truly think I become the boss mode version of myself at this time of year. I love Christmas so much and one thing I absolutely adore about this time of year is Netflix original holiday movies. I unironically love The Christmas Prince, I watch it at least twice every year and I straight up sobbed the first time I watched it and since then I've just watched them all. I set myself the goal last year to watch them all and I shared updates on my Instagram stories with some thoughts on each one and I'm continuing the trend this year. It's slowly becoming my brand. If you want to hear my rambly Christmas thoughts make sure to follow me on Instagram so you don't miss them! But for this post, I just thought I'd let you know what's coming up this year that I'm most excited about as well as my thoughts on the ones that are already out! I know it's only November but after the year we've had in 2020 it doesn't hurt to start celebrating Christmas a little early!

Holidate

This is a romcom starring Emma Roberts and Luke Bracey and when I first heard that Luke Bracey was going to be in a Netflix Christmas movie I may have gotten a little bit over-excited because I just love him (you may recognise him from such things as Monte Carlo and The Best Of Me). This story follows Sloane and Jackson who are both tired of dating around the holidays so agree to be each other's 'holidate', someone they can bring to holiday parties with no commitment and obviously things start to develop. This is a slightly R rated Christmas movie which makes a nice change for the usual family-friendly ones that Netflix put out and it was definitely very funny and enjoyable (not just because it had Luke Bracey in it).

Operation Christmas Drop

Operation Christmas Drop is a military operation that happens every year in Guam where the US airforce stationed there drop gifts on some remote islands in Micronesia. This film follows a government advisor who has been sent by her boss to write a report on the airbase in order to put it forward for closure and while there she learns the magic of Christmas and has a run-in with the handsome captain of the base. This film was joyous and I can't speak to the representation of pacific islanders in this film but I personally enjoyed it a lot though the CGI gecko was a choice.

Dash and Lily

This is a tv show that follows two teenagers Dash and Lily who have never met but start up a relationship by leaving each other notes and challenges in a notebook all around New York City. I honestly adored this show, I mean I knew I was going to love it from the offset but it's just so wholesome and just a delightful watch. I binged it all in one sitting and will most likely watch it again (and again) because who doesn't love a happy Christmas tv show set in New York!

Jingle Jangle: A Christmas Journey

An old toymaker who has lost his magic touch after his apprentice stole his designs years ago rediscovers his creativity and joy when his granddaughter shows up on his doorstep just in time for Christmas. This was such a joy, it's a musical and reminded me a lot of both The Greatest Showman and Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium. This is such a well-made film and the cast are excellent (I did have some issues with it but that's just because I hold it to a higher standard that some of the other maybe less professional Christmas movies. So if you're not personally a fan of the cheesy Christmas romcoms this one could be the one for you.

So that's all the Christmas movies and tv shows that I've watched so far this year but there's still so much to come so here are the ones that I'm personally most excited for...

The Princess Switch: Switched Again

I don't think anyone truly understands just how ready I am for this movie. It's the long-awaited (two years) sequel to The Princess Switch which is personally one of my absolute favourite Christmas movies that Netflix have done. I've already watched it this year and watch it multiple times each year so I quite frankly cannot wait until this is finally out.

Home For Christmas Season Two

I watched this one last year and it follows a Norwegian woman as she navigates dating around the holidays. I enjoyed it last year so I'm excited to pick it up again this year to see how the story develops. The first season is definitely worth a watch if you haven't seen it already!

The Christmas Chronicles 2

I wasn't the biggest fan of the first Christmas Chronicles film but it was fun and super festive so I'm still excited to see this next instalment because it promises to get me in a super festive mood!

So those are the upcoming movies and shows that I'm most excited for but I put together this little list of all the original Christmas movies that are coming out this year and when in case you want to get into the festive spirit!
Are you a fan of the cheesy Christmas movies or do you prefer the fun family ones? Let me know your favourite Christmas movie in the comments.
