James Newman - Embers
I feel like it's only fitting that we open with the UK entry as a vast majority of my readership are from here and you may want to cheer for the home team. We've once again gone with James Newman, brother of John Newman of 'Love Me Again' and 'Blame' fame. James himself is also a BRIT award-winning songwriter having composed 'Waiting All Night' by Rudimental. This song definitely has a super contemporary UK chart sound and I can definitely see it being a popular track if it didn't have the Eurovision stigma attached and that's the whole point of this post, to remove the Eurovision stigma and show that a majority of Eurovision songs are in fact just good songs!Italy
MÃ¥neskin - Zitti E Buoni
I'm a simple girl, I see Italy and it automatically goes in my top ten, after all, Italy's entry in 2015 is the primary reason why I'm such a fan of this contest! This is very much not Italy's usual style or a typical Eurovision entry it's pure alternative rock and stylistically it this band is exactly how I picture The Six from Daisy Jones and The Six. It's in Italian but as I often say even if you don't understand the lyrics of a song you can generally feel the vibe from the music and this is one of those cases. This is the perfect song for angrily jumping around your room to.San Marino
Senhit ft. Flo Rida - Adrenalina
Yes, you read that correctly, San Marino have ACTUAL real-life Flo Rida featuring on their song! San Marino is a microstate and has a very rocky history with Eurovision having only qualified for the final two times before so when we found out they'd somehow managed to secure a worldwide superstar in the form of Flo Rida we were all floored. The track itself, even without the addition of Flo Rida, is so modern and catchy that it's hard to believe that this is the same San Marino that we've come to know in the contest. They were even top of the community ranking at one point!Bulgaria
Victoria - growing up is getting old
I mentioned in last years post that Victoria has a very Billie Eilish-esque style but I actually think she reminds me more of Lorde, but either way, this is very much my usual style of music. This is a soft ballad with a contemporary pop style about how we lose our childlike wonder as we get older (very much sad girl bop vibes). Victoria has just put out an album called 'a little dramatic' so if you're a fan of this one I definitely recommend checking out her music. Some of my other faves from that album include 'the funeral song' and 'imaginary friend'.Switzerland
Gjon's Tears - Tout L'Univers
Gjon's Tears is so incredibly talented and after loving last years entry 'Répondez Moi' I had high hopes for this one, but I think he may have exceeded them! It's entirely in French but this song gives me massive Sleeping at Last vibes so if that's your thing then I'm sure you will love this one!Iceland
Daði Freyr - 10 Years
After his smash hit 'Think About Things' from last year, Daði Freyr is back for Iceland. This was probably the most hotly anticipated track of the season. The most fun element of this song though is that I'm actually singing on it! It's been my dream for as long as I can remember to participate in Eurovision so the fact that it kind of happened is still blowing my tiny mind. I'm part of the choir along with 1000 other people so you definitely can't hear me but I know my voice is in there somewhere!I hope with this post I've opened your eyes to a whole new side of Eurovision than you're maybe used to. You can listen to these six songs and the rest of the 40 entries on the official Eurovision 2021 Spotify playlist! Are you an avid Eurovision watcher, do you only watch it because it's the only thing on, or have you never seen it?
